Beyond the Cliffs of Moher
This Celtic solo book is designed for the Harpsicle© Harp and other small harps, although larger harps can also easily play this music. The range is from C below middle C on the low end, to the high G two and one half octaves above middle C. It has a wide variety of Irish tunes, including Danny Boy and Greensleeves. Some are easy and some are more challenging. The songs are in no particular order of difficulty.
There are no sharps or flats in the book, but harps with levers or pedals will enjoy it equally. Several of the Celtic selections include ornamentation that is often seen in Irish music. Those techniques are explained below. The chord symbols are listed above the measures in every song. All the fingering is included to help the beginning harpers find their positions and move form measure to measure more effectively. The first two selections also include the brackets to help the musician at the beginning. The tempos are listed at the top of every song and a glossary is provided below to explain those tempos.
Classics and More
“Classics and More” contains a wide variety of classic music and several other well known songs, as well as three original pieces. The selections range from easy to intermediate level, and they are in no particular order of difficulty. None of the pieces contain any sharps or flats, or any accidentals, and all are in the key of C or A minor. These features make the book perfect for those who have harps without levers or pedals. The tunes are all in the range of the Harpsicle© Harp, which is a twenty- six stringed instrument starting on the C below middle C. All the selections can be played on large harps also. The chords are printed above the staff so the harper can change or add to the music and make it uniquely his or her own.
“Gospel Favorites for all Seasons” contains a wide variety of Gospel music and several songs for special holidays, as well as two original pieces. The chords are printed above the staff so the harper can change or add to the music and make these beloved hymns even more beautiful. Other instruments can also use the chords to play in ensembles and worship groups.
“Quiet Moments” is a therapeutic harp music book that can be played on any harp, with or without levers. The music is not fancy or flowery because it is therapy music. It is meant to calm and relax the listener, more than merely entertain.
I have played for the ill and grieving for several years, and have wanted to write my own therapy book for some time. After completing the International Harp Therapy Program, I decided the time was right.
Each piece in this book is written in four different keys. This will allow you to have four choices, if you are playing in the listener’s resonant tone. The resonant tone is the specific note that causes the body to react in a positive way toward the music. If you are not using resonant tone, then simply pick the key that seems to be the most conducive to the patient and the environment around you.
Also, I have labeled the mode for each song. Different modes are used for different needs. Ionian is the most common, and is usually cheerful and helps to lift spirits. If you don’t use the modes, and many musicians don’t, then simply pick the piece of music you think is appropriate for the listener. If it is causing a negative effect, then switch to another key.
I have also added chords to the music. You can expand your music by using the chord along with the written music, or you can do improvisation. Be careful not to make the music to full for the listener. Therapy music is simple. Less is more, especially in the Locrian mode. Two of the songs have lyrics. If they aren’t in your key, try singing up or down an octave.
